Language
Although lots of people in the Algarve will speak English, the native language is Portuguese.
If you learn one word though, make it Obrigado (obrigada if you're a woman)... as saying thank you is always very courteous.Because most of the shops and services will be run by people who can speak English, it is not neccessary to be fluent in Portuguese, but it is handy to know a few words and phrases.

Currency
The currency used in Portugal and the Algarve is the Euro. This is the same as in most of the other European Union countries including Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Finland.
There are 7 different Euro banknotes in denominations ranging from 5 Euros up to 500 Euros and each note has it's own prominent colour, and design, depicting one of the seven periods of european architectural history.
These features help distinguish the notes from one another and are standard throughout every country that uses the Euro.
The coins, as with the banknotes, increase in size as their value increases.

Emergencies
In the event of an emergency, you should dial 112, the national emergency number.
This service is free of charge and your call can be answered in either English, Portuguese or French.
If you require medical assistance, you should go to the local Health Care Centre (Centro de Saude).
The Hospital Emergency Services must only be used in serious cases.
