ALGARVE - SURF

Location - Portugal

Algarve is a well-known European surf destination. There are good waves for everyone, because you can find many different kinds of  waves such as reef breaks, beach breaks and point breaks.

The Camp is located in Aljezur, its origin is derived from the arabic word "Aljuzur" (الجزر) as in Plural of island. (pron. IPA: is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 323.5 km² and a total population of 5,322 inhabitants. The municipality is composed of 4 parishes, and is located in the District of Faro.

The biggest days for waves are normally at the end of winter, although you can find good conditions throughout the whole year.

The Algarve coast is one of the warmest places in Europe, and fortunately for everyone, the area around the surf house area is protected by the government, because it is a Natural Park.

The orange groves and blossoming almond trees add colour to this fertile region in contrast with the whitewashed traditional houses. Due to the mild nature of the weather the Algarve is ideal for many outdoor sporting activities such as water sports, golf in one of the numerous world-class golf courses, tennis, horse riding, and many more...and of course SURFING! The Algarve’s not only known for its cosmopolitan nightlife with many bars and clubs but also for the many waterside restaurants serving fresh fish and "cataplana" (a local shellfish speciality). The uncrowded beaches, the charming weather and, off course, the variety of waves are just the icing on the cake.

Surf Spots  are surrounded by incredible natural scenery, panoramic views, beautiful sunsets and long sandy beaches. Some of the most renown waves are Cordoama, Carrapateira, Bordeira, Praia do Loved, and Sagres.
Not to mention all the secrets spots that our guides know about.

The strong Nortada wind and the big lagoon offer ideal conditions to learn and practice kiteboarding on the Algarve. That is why the PKRA choose the beach of Alvor as one tour stops of the professional Kiteboarding Worldtour. But the others days, the Portuguese Pro Riders who are also training on the lagoon and close-by ocean, keep motivation and inspiration up.

The water temperature varies from 15° to 21° and you can enjoy a lot of sunny winter days in Algarve.

Agricultural products of the region include fig, almond, orange (laranja do Algarve), carob bean, strawberry tree and cork oak. Horticulture is important and the region's landscape was known for the large areas of land covered with plastic greenhouses which are used for that end. Fishing and aquaculture are important activities in the coastal area of Algarve, with sardines, soles, cyprinids, gilt-head bream and various seafood being the major productions. Food processing, cement and construction, are the main industries. Tourism related activities are extensive and make the bulk of Algarve's economy during summer time.

In the 1960s the Algarve became a very popular destination for tourists, mainly from Britain. It has since become a common destination for Germans, Dutch and Irish people. Many of these tourists own their own property in the region. There are Algarve-based English-written publications and newspapers specifically addressed to this community. In addition to the natural beauties and plenty of beaches, the Algarve has invested in the creation of a network of golf courses. Well-known beaches in the Algarve range from Praia da Luz to Armação de Pêra. A well known spa town is Caldas de Monchique.

Tourism plays an important role in the economy of the Algarve region. A large number of seasonal job opportunities are tourism-related and are fulfilled by thousands of immigrant workers arrived from countries like Brazil, Ukraine and Cape Verde, among others.

The summer months see high temperatures that attract beach-goers and sun-lovers from around the world.

The Algarve has the perfect weather and climate for tourism and surf.

The maximum temperatures in Algarve fluctuate between 15 and 31 °C, with the temperature never falling below zero in the winter months.
