History Maldives

According to Maldive legend, a Cingaleese prince named Koimale run aground with his wife, Sri Lanka’s king daughter in a Maldive lagoon, and took over as the first Sultan.

Centuries went by, the island were visited and influenced by sea men from Arabic sea and from the shores of the Indic Ocean. The pirates from Mopla from the Malabar shore, nowadays Kerala state in India, knock down the islands. On the XVI century, the Portuguese took over the islands for fifteen years (1558 -1573) before they were expelled by the national hero and afterwards Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Azam.


The country was governed as an independent Islamic Sultanate between 1153 and 1968. From 1887 to July 25th 1965 was a British colony. On 1953 thy try to be a Republic, but the sultanate was restored. The Maldive people were Buddhist before they became Islamic, this conversion was explained in a controversial mythological story about a demon named Rannamaari.

Alter the independence from the United Kingdom on 1965, the sultanate keep on for 3 more years, On November 11th 1968 was abolish and replaced by a republic.
